Wegner – more than just one good chair

Hans J. Wegner among some of his furniture successes.

Hans J. Wegner (1914-2007) is one of Denmark’s most famous and prolific furniture designers. During his long career he designed around 1200 different pieces of furniture, of which approx. 500 have been produced for varying lengths of time. One reason for his productivity was the desire to create perfection. A famous Wegner quote reads: “Imagine if you could just draw one good chair in her life – but you simply cannot.”

The 100th anniversary of Hans J. Wegner’s birth is marked by numerous events. One of the major events will be the exhibition ”WEGNER – just one good chair,” which opens at the Design Museum Denmark in Copenhagen on 3 April 2014. It will be the museum’s largest furniture exhibition ever, and it tells the story of the inspirations and working methods that characterized Wegner’s career.

At the same time, the many Wegner works at the exhibition can be used as a starting point for an understanding of the concept of Danish Design, which was internationally leading during a great part of the 20th century .

The exhibition also tries to explain why Wegner’s furniture is still more popular than ever, and to describe Wegner’s role as an ideal for many of today’s world-renowned designers.

The exhibition “WEGNER – just one good chair” is displayed until 2 November 2014. Further information about the exhibition is available at www.designmuseum.dk

Wegner’s “The Round Chair” (PP501) was made world famous thanks to television studios during the U.S. presidential election in 1960.
