The wishbone-chair in glossy navy-blue finish

Carl Hansen & Son continue the tradition of celebrating Hans J. Wegner’s birthday on April 2, 1914, with a limited edition of the wishbone-chair.

This year, the wishbone-chair is wearing a darker shade, with a glossy navy-blue finish.

The surface has been selected in collaboration with London-based designer and creative director Ilse Crawford and her multidisciplinary company Studioilse.

Hans J. Wegner’s fascination of Asian design history and craftsmanship inspires the deep, warm hue of the navy and high gloss finish.

The blue refers to the colour that has been such a big part of Chinese culture: from the blue and white porcelain that has been highly loved for so many decades to the dark blue in indigo textiles.

The wishbone-chair, which was designed in 1949 and put into production in 1950, is one of the first five chairs Hans J. Wegner designed for Carl Hansen & Son.

Today, the chair is still manufactured at Carl Hansen & Son’s factory on Funen, where its 14 parts are manually assembled, and its seat is braided by hand using 120 meters of paper yarn.

Seventy years after it came into production, it is still an international icon and classic with its clean form, sincere materials and uncompromising craftsmanship, which has helped define Danish design.

Each limited edition comes with a small brass plate engraved with Hans J. Wegner’s signature and date of birth, discreetly placed on the inside of the chair frame, as well as a certificate of authenticity.
