Danish Design Makers is a group of independent furniture and interior designers, which each year can be found at the IMM Cologne section of experimental design. This was also the case this year, when one of the participants was Thomas E. Alken, who presented Sound Lounger – a distinctive musical piece of furniture that allows for intense music listening in extremely comfortable surroundings.
The chair has built in a hidden sound system in the headrest, consisting of 3 active and 4 passive loudspeakers. The system is controlled via a wireless connection to the user’s mobile phone, TV or otherwise. The built-in battery has the capacity to 3 days of use.
The chair is mounted on a star base with a return mechanism. The wood is Danish ash, and the chair is upholstered with Coda fabric from Kvadrat.
In addition to being a center for music listening, Sound Lounger is also a sculptural element in the room and a statement that here, the good sound is highly appreciated.
Thomas E. Alken imagines that the chair can be used both in private housing and that it can be applied in airport lounges, hotels, libraries etc.
“Many, especially the large furniture manufacturers, stopped by our booth in Cologne to see the chair. They showed great interest in the Sound Lounger and were excited for both its expression, concept and the fresh vitamins in a time when most furniture is similar,” says Thomas E. Alken.
