With inspiration from Easter Island

The giant stone faces on Easter Island has always had a fascinating effect on viewers, and they have also inspired designer Philip Bro to this new shell chair, which will be launched by furniture manufacturer Softline. The chair’s name – Moai – also derives from the mythical Pacific island, where it just means such a stone head.

A special feature of the Moai chair is the characteristic notches around the armrest, which both constitute a pleasant stronghold when getting up from the chair,  and gives it a look that recalls the great stone heads when being viewed from the side.

The embracing shell offers a refuge, which you can hide in when you need a break from everyday turmoil.

The upholstered shell is based on a single metal cross, which follows the soft form of the chair and merges into four turned wooden legs.
