Since the 1930s, like few others, Ivan Schlechter has put his artisanal touch to furniture by architects such as Finn Juhl, Mogens Kock, Hans Wegner, Poul Kjærholm, Tove and Edward Kindt-Larsen, Bernt Jørgen Gammelgaard and Aagaard Andersen.
An exceptional effort over many many years.
Way back in the 1930s – when Ivan was still an apprentice – he met the young architects. Together they developed prototypes and found solutions to the artisanal details.
Ivan was also a part of the carpenter exhibitions in the heyday 40s, 50s and 60s.
Back in 1951 Ivan Schlechter established his own business in Frederiksberg (Copenhagen).
It was here his long-standing and close cooperation with Poul Kjærholm began and where they solved one of the many challenges – the padding of Kjærholms dining chair.
In the 90s, Ivan opened workshop in Gilleleje together with his friend – former rector of the Danish Design Ole Gjerløw-Knudsen.
For many years they stood behind a “furniture classic hospital” where Schlechter often revisited the furniture he himself had helped to produce.
These days Ivan is handing over his workshop – this puts an end to an 85-year-long effort in service of Danish furniture design…
Sincere love of honest craftsmanship.
