Arne Jacobsen with a few Eggs in the Royal Room at the Radisson SAS Royal in 1960.
This year it is 55 years ago that Arne Jacobsen’s famous Egg Chair was created for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. The hotel will like to celebrate the anniversary by arranging a global design competition, in which everybody is invited to design one’s own version of the iconic chair.
The Royal Hotel, which is now called Radisson Blu Royal, is known as the world’s first design hotel. And although many other design hotels have been built since 1960, the Radisson Blu Royal still remains as a unique example in this field.
Both hotel guests at the Radisson Blu Royal and other design enthusiasts can participate in the competition. The competition takes place on-line at design.radissonblu.com.
The competition runs from 1 September to 13 October 2015. Each week, three finalists will proceed to the finals. One of the finalists will be selected by an expert jury, while the number of votes on design.radissonblu.com determines who else to go further in the competition. Finally, the jury selects the winner among the 15 finalists.
The winner will receive his or her own full-scale physical version of the Egg and a 3-night VIP stay in Copenhagen. There is also the possibility that the winning chair may be part of Radisson Blu’s new design line, which will be introduced later this year. Finally, the 15 finalists in the competition will be exhibited as miniature models in the Radisson Blu hotel chain’s upcoming traveling exhibition that will be shown at selected hotels worldwide during 2016.
The competition is arranged in cooperation with design furniture company Fritz Hansen, who uis the manufacturer of the Egg Chair.
