Furniture gimmick marks anniversary

A two-in-one version of the Spanish Chair.

The 100th anniversary of the famous Danish furniture designer Børge Mogensen’s birth is marked in many ways. One of the more startling is the gimmick, which Fredericia Furniture – who is the leading producer of Mogensen’s furniture – has launched on the basis of one of his most famous pieces of furniture, the Spanish Chair from 1958.

Fredericia Furniture has allowed the Argentine designer Alfredo Häberli to play with the Spanish Chair, and he has created a series of unique variants of it – including a double chair, a rocking chair, a chair with a built-in lamp, etc. These chairs are made purely for exhibition purpose and will not come into production.

Alfredo Häberli is a great admirer of Mogensen’s furniture design: “The Spanish Chair communicates with me through its flawless design and its precious materials. It brings stories, pictures and ideas to me, and if Børge Mogensen could interpret an old Spanish officer’s chair, my stories might also pave the way for my profound and sincere tribute to an iconic chair and its designer,” he says.

Häberli’s fantasy chairs could be seen for the first time at the Stockholm Furniture Fair in February. They can now be seen on the big Børge Mogensen memorial exhibition at the art museum Trapholt in Kolding, Denmark.
